This advertisement is from a 1940 Terre Haute
Tribune Star. The arrow at the lower part of the picture that is pointing to the
label is identifying the bottling date. The date was added to the labels by
punching holes into the label before it was applied instead of printing on the
label. This code was not an internal code for quality control, but rather the
actual date of brewing that allowed the customer to see when his beer was
bottled.
